Learning about the product details, let me tell you what I have to say about this particular binocular model. Here are my personal feedbacks and comments about this Nikon Monarch ATB:

  • For me, it is long lasting and very easy to use. It is just perfect for family use especially to kids and mothers who are not really into hi-tech devices. Since this is user-friendly, it becomes a favorite for family use.
  • I can also guarantee that it is durable because of its rubber coating that can withstand waterfall, mud, rain, moist, fog and even shock.
  • It also comes in an eco-glass optical which is a hit among users including me. This type of optical lenses are made with anti-reflect material in order to provide clear images through 8x magnification in 42 millimeters of diameter. This retractable lens is also beneficial for those whose eyes are sensitive in direct light.
  • Among the other features, I find the field of view perfect for far sighted people since they can see up to 361 feet.
  • For those who wear eye glasses, the 19.6 millimeters is very acceptable and aids in any kind of vision problem. I also find the focus knob to be user-friendly and accessible since it is located right in the middle.
  • From what I have observed, the Nikon 7294 Monarch ATB 8×42 binoculars is ideal to use in activities like boating, hunting, bird watching, fishing, watching concerts and sporting events, attending college events and school plays, watching fireworks and opera shows, finding a specific person in a crowd, hiking, climbing elevated areas, and trekking.
  • For me, the presence of quality lenses in a strong and compact design is what makes it very popular and widely used by outdoor enthusiasts.

What to Improve

After listing down all the positive reviews I have about the Nikon Monarch ATB 8×42, let us take a look on my unfavorable reviews.

  • The first review I have is about the lens cups. I have noticed that the lens caps easily break with frequent use. When it comes to the eye cups, they are not perfectly shaped to fit the contours of the face. This then results to a slight discomfort during use. Though this is just a minor observation, it still important since every user wants to maximize the value of their money.
  • Another point is with the magnification. With this Nikon ATB, you can only get 8x magnifying lens. For me, it would have been better if it includes a higher magnification. With such, I can say that it will take a while before I can focus to a particular object. At some point, I found the objects looking blurred and unstable.
  • Moreover, I felt some isolated cases of discomfort like headaches which was also experienced by some users.
  • Though others don’t find this as a big disadvantage, I found the weight to be a little heavy at 21 ounces. There are several models that weigh heavier than this, but still I take this as a minor disadvantage.
  • Another concern I have is with the eye cups that are extendable and retractable. This function is not really well explained in the manual, so it can create confusion at some point.
  • I also realized that under some light conditions, I see a green and purple cast found beside the object. I am not really sure what this is about.
  • In addition, the lens cap at the bottom portion are not properly designed that made them look cheap.
  • For me, this Nikon 8×42 is not really for high end performance like star gazing, so I recommend it for general use such as bird watching, hunting, wild life observation and water sports like rafting, events and concerts.

Thoughts to Ponder

So, do you think that this Monarch ATB is something that you should recommend to others? The answer is yes and no, but it will be properly explained. If you want to get a handy and light set of binoculars, this is just right. Nikon Monarch 8×42 is also suitable for carrying it around the neck without feeling any discomfort and fatigue. It also has a good balance in the optical quality considering its price.

If you are a back packer, this is beneficial since it is not bulky and light. It also guarantees bright view and excellent images even when there is fog and moist around it. If you are very particular with small details, this Nikon Monarch ATB may not work well for you. Some of the minor flaws include inferior eye cups, lens caps that don’t stay in place, lacks sharpness in corners, and a narrow field of view.

About the Price

However, the price for me is just right given all the good features included. If you are still learning the use of binoculars, this is a good pair for you. Though you should not be expecting much from it, it is a perfect to start off. After you are used to it and wanted to see more in the beauty of nature, you can already upgrade to high performance binoculars. This Nikon Monarch 8×42 is normally for general use, so don’t expect it to satisfy your needs in star gazing and other extreme outdoor activities. Generally, this is a good device to start with.
